Why use an oil separator or oil skimmer?
Oil separators and oil skimmers are fully automated solutions for removing contaminants, such as tramp oils out of liquids. Due to their low cost, high efficiency and ease of use, an oil separator, tube skimmer or oil skimmer is used in many applications.
Oil skimmers and oil separators are often used in the metalworking industry to extend the lifespan of coolants, resulting in improved machine tool performance and cost savings. They are also widely used in the food industry to quickly and easily filter floating fats from rinse water. Other application areas include the automotive industry, wastewater, process water, ballast water, and the chemical and offshore industries.
AXO Filtertechniek, as a distributor of ABANAKI, offers many types of skimmers for different applications. We have a wide range of belt skimmers, tube skimmers and oil separators. If you would like personal advice or more information, please contact us.
Maintenance of coolants in (CNC) machine tools
Oil skimmers and oil separators are intended to clean oil-contaminated liquids. Maintaining coolants is of great importance in this regard. A coolant provides lubrication of the tool, removal of heat, and protection against corrosion.
Poor maintenance is one of the main causes of reduced quality of the coolant, as well as a contributing factor to tool wear, rejection of products, reduced machine tolerances, and therefore higher costs.
Tramp oils forms a contaminating layer on the cooling lubricant over time. This airtight layer forms a source of nutrition for bacteria and fungi, which are subsequently dispersed into the air. This can cause allergic reactions and is also a source of unpleasant odors.
It is important to remove this contaminating layer in an efficient and professional manner. If this layer is not continuously removed, the coolant must be replaced more often, which results in significant costs in the long term.
AXO Filtertechniek offers oil skimmers for this purpose with an integrated timer and magnetic base for easy placement. As well as the mobile industrial AXO Oil Separator, which is equipped with a 300 micron pre-filter and membrane pump for optimal oil separation, as shown in the image below:
For optimal cleaning of coolants, oil skimmers and oil separators are combined with belt filters. The AXO Filtertechniek belt filter provides an important first filtration step by filtering all solid dirt particles such as swarf out of the coolant, after which the remaining floating oil layer is removed using the oil skimmer.
Oil skimmer for difficult to reach places
Belt oil skimmers are usually placed directly above a liquid tank for the adhesion belt to be in contact with the liquid. A counterweight ensures that the adhesion belt is kept under tension and is located below the liquid surface. If an oil skimmer cannot be placed directly above the liquid, a belt skimmer with a counterweight cannot be used.
To place a belt skimmer at an angle, the ABANAKI belt skimmer with spring-tensioned adhesion belt and stand construction is the perfect solution. The belt skimmer can be placed in any position in this way.
Difference between an oil skimmer and oil separator
An oil skimmer and oil separator come in many shapes and sizes. In most cases, oil skimmers have a belt, tube, or disc that is in contact with the liquid. The floating contamination adheres to this belt, tube, or disc, which is continuously in motion and carries the contamination to a scraper in the skimmer. The contamination is scraped off and removed; this process repeats continuously without intervention from an operator and without the use of filters.
The mobile AXO Oil Separator is equipped with a membrane pump connected to a floating surface skimmer. The surface skimmer can be adjusted very precisely to remove only the contaminated top layer (tramp oil) of the coolant from machine tools where it is often used for. The tramp oil enters the oil separator, where it is further concentrated and discharged. This ensures that hardly any coolant is lost. The oil separator is therefore more efficient than an oil skimmer.
Thanks to its mobility and compact size, the AXO Oil Separator can easily be used throughout the entire machine park. The required floor space is only 90x50 cm.
OIL BOSS oil separator for limited floor space
Where floor space is very limited, the OIL BOSS oil separator is an excellent alternative. With the patented filter and movable design, no floor space is taken up.
Thanks to a magnetic coupling plate, the Oil Boss can be attached to a machine tool without the use of tools. The patented filter ensures that large volumes are cleaned in a short time. Would you like personal advice or more information, please contact us.
